Sturgis Youth & Family Council – St. Joseph County

• First designated Safe Community coalition for Michigan.
• Recently conducted the ACTS for 2^nd time.
• Provided incentives to high school students who wore seat belts.
• Sponsored a freshman alcohol awareness conference where participants played alcohol jeopardy and participated in a fatal vision goggle activity.
• Sponsored a preschool seat belt awareness program which included a parent meeting in the evening.
• Sponsored a bike helmet give-away at a bike rodeo held during Michiana Celebration.
• Conducted a 10 Most Dangerous Intersections workshop.
• Also conducted a Walkable Communities workshop.
• Recently sponsored a Neighborhood Network gathering to train parents on safety issues.
• Sturgis Youth & Family Council is a private nonprofit organization supported by schools and the city.
• Obtain some of their funding from a grant from the county. The county passed a local ordinance which attaches a $5 surcharge to all traffic tickets. The county collects the surcharges and distributes it back to the community in the form of grants.
