Treatment 7: Advance Signing for Roadway Surprises

Michigan Standard: A multitude of warning signs are offered, but none is required for a variety of driving situations. Warning lights are optional.

Where might you find this on your system: You might find these along rural roads in advance of curves and hills. These are most appropriate at a point on any road, urban or rural, where the nature of the road changes significantly or a quick response is required by the motorist.

Recommendation:
Although the above pictures depict a specific roadway situation (signals), this recommendation applies to any roadway situation that might be a surprise to the motorist. Be on the lookout for roadway situations that seem to be surprising motorists in your community, and consider whether an advance information or warning sign might be helpful.

Conflicts with other community goals: No conflicts have been identified.

Ease of implementation: Signs with any message are easy to make or purchase, and install. The addition of warning beacons requires electrical connection. If the beacons are to be tied to the red or yellow phase of a traffic signal, then additional wire must be laid and connection made directly to the signal controller cabinet. A one-person crew is needed to install the electrical connection; a two-person crew is generally required to install the signs.
