ACTS Roadway Friendliness Tool
Treatment 6: Advanced Lane Assignment Signs and Markings Michigan Standard: Advance lane assignment signs and markings are suggested to be placed as needed so that motorists can select the appropriate lane before reaching the ends of the lines of the waiting vehicles. Where might you find this on your system: You might find these on the main road approaches to major intersections when drivers in certain lanes are required to turn, or turns are permitted from inside lanes where such turns would otherwise be illegal. Recommendation: Adhere to the standard (above). Also, look for opportunities to add an additional set of signs and markings for roads carrying heavy traffic or heavy turn movements. Conflicts with other community goals: No conflicts with other treatments have been identified.
Ease of implementation: Lane assignment signs and markings are easy to make or purchase. Ground-mounted signs can be erected with no need to close traffic lane; two-man crew to install, using power auger or post-driver. Markings installation will require traffic lane closure. A two-person crew is needed to install, and may require paint sprayer, thermoplastic extruder, or other specialized equipment, depending on choice of material. Also, most marking material can install only on dry pavement, and with medium-to-warm air temperature. Previous Treatment | Next
