Treatment 5: Stop and Yield Signs

Michigan Standard: Standard sizes include: STOP sign (30"x 30" required, but 24 x 24" allowed on low-volume local streets and roads with low approach speeds); Yield sign (36"x 36" x 36' required). Brightness: Any grade of reflectorized sheeting is allowed.

Where might you find this on your system: You might find these reflectorized signs at approaches to intersections having Stop or Yield control.

Recommendation: Even though you can't read the message on the signs pictured above, you can probably recognize the signs as STOP and YIELD by their distinctive shapes. In fact, if a community installs standard or larger size signs and maintains good reflective sheeting on them, these signs will connect with the motorist well in advance of the point where the motorist could actually read the letters. Make sure all existing signs are bright in daytime, and reflect well at night. New sheeting material is recommended to be "High-Intensity" type sheeting or equivalent. At any location where additional emphasis is sought, recommend use larger sign sizes, up to 48" x 48".

Conflicts with other community goals: No conflicts have been identified.

Ease of implementation: Stop and Yield signs are easy to make or purchase. Large sizes (48") may require support by two posts; smaller sizes can be placed on single post. A two-person crew is needed to install; if new posts are required, auger equipment or a post-driver is needed.
