Treatment 4: Larger Street Name Signs

Michigan Standard: Four-inch letters are required. This requirement will change in 2002 to suggest a 6-inch minimum for all roads except local roads with speeds of 25 mph or less.

Where might you find this on your system: This is most common at intersections. Check first on your higher speed roads, and any main arteries through your community.

Recommendation: Use 6-inch minimum letters, even in residential areas. On roads with speeds of 45 mph or more, or on main arteries, use 8-inch or larger letters. Mixed case letters (with first letter capital) are easier to read than all-capitals.

Conflicts with other community goals: Aesthetics is a consideration. Some community residents may want to retain smaller, more ornamental posts with 4-inch letters within residential areas.

Ease of implementation: Street nameplates are easy to make or purchase. Installation of new plate on new post is simple. Upgrading an existing ornamental post to change from 4" to 6" letters may require the make-up of additional bracket to handle the larger sign. A one-person crew is needed to install the plate only. A two-person crew plus auger equipment is needed to install the post and sign.
