Treatment 3: Lighted Overhead Signs
Michigan Standard: This treatment is not required.
Where might you find this on your system: You might find these
at intersections between major routes.
Recommendation: An internally-lighted sign is the final design
touch that could be applied to street name signing. This can be applied
to rural or urban intersections.
Conflicts with other community goals: None identified. Lighted
signs might actually be considered an aesthetic improvement.
Ease of implementation: In addition to implementation needs of
normal overhead signing, an internally-lighted sign requires wiring of
the sign to a source of electricity. At most urban locations on a major
route, an electricity source will be close by and in use with traffic
signals or street lighting. The specialized nature of this sign may lead
an agency to purchase, rather than self-construct. A two-person crew,
including an electrician, is needed to install these signs; the same equipment
considerations as normal overhead signing apply in this case.
