Treatment 2: Overhead Street Name Signs
Michigan Standard: These signs are not required, but are recommended.
Where might you find this on your system: You might find these
at intersections and mostly on the major routes in the state.
Recommendation: On any multi-lane road that carries a lot of traffic,
it is helpful to raise the height of the street name sign and place it
more in the driver's cone of vision by mounting overhead. Letter height
should be 8-to-10" to take advantage of driver's earlier viewing.
Shown here on mast arm that has been erected to support the traffic signal.
These signs are not often attempted on signal span wire.
Conflicts with other community goals: No conflicts with other treatments
have been identified. This type of installation usually accompanies the
decision to use mast arm rather than signal span wire, which is an aesthetic
improvement at the intersection.
Ease of implementation: Mast arms are relatively cheap, but the
cantilever pole to support the mast arms (usually 4 per intersection)
are approx $20,000 each installed. Two-or-three man crew to install; auger
equipment, street or lane closure required.
